The worldwide transportation of goods within the global supply chain has a carbon footprint of around 2,800 mega- tonnes CO2e (see PDF).
Weight is a major factor in transportation fuel consumption and green house gas (GHG) emissions. Less weight means the potential for lower fuel consumption and lower GHG emissions.
A ubiquitous component of the global supply chain is the pallet. Annually, 500 million new pallets are manufactured. They become part of the roughly 2 billion pallets that are in circulation in the U.S. at any given time. 93% of all goods move on a pallet.
The typical pallet is made of wood. Wood pallets are facing increased scrutiny from supply chain analysis for ...

Over one billion wooden pallets are used across America in the transporting of freight to stores and businesses nationwide. But are these pallets transporting more than just goods to consumers? Experts say yes.
In a recent study conducted by Intelligent Global Pooling Systems (iGPS), wooden pallets from Portland, ME fishing docks and Philadelphia, PA food markets were scientifically tested, discovering dangerous amounts of bacteria in the pallets, an article in Food Poison Journal states.
According to results, 5 out of 30 pallets from Portland contained Listeria, a type of bacteria that can lead to food poisoning, with three of those containing the most dangerous form of the bacte...

Orlando, FL: In a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice and Florida Attorney General's Office, Intelligent Global Pooling Systems (iGPS Co. LLC) is calling for a formal investigation into the misleading and abusive trade practices of the wood pallet industry. It says the actions by the wooden pallet industry that spread false and misleading information about the safety of plastic pallets epitomize the reckless and disreputable character of the industry. "Asking a politician in his final minutes in office to submit a letter, such as the letter former U.S. Senator Christopher Dodd sent to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration at the obvious request of the wooden pallet industry, is ...

That moldy odor has stricken more popular Johnson & Johnson medicines, prompting another recall of Tylenol. It was one of two new recalls J&J announced today. (Here’s the Dow Jones Newswires story.)
Due to complaints about the smell, Johnson & Johnson’s McNeil Consumer Healthcare unit said it’s pulling 34,056 bottles of Tylenol 8-Hour caplets. (Here’s the news release.)
The 150-count bottles were made at the company’s Fort Washington, Pa., plant, shut down since last April and now undergoing a re-fitting. J&J wouldn’t specify when the caplets were made, saying only that it was before the plant was shut down.
The odor problem ...
